Alibaba’s OpenSandbox

Letting AI agents run code is easy. Letting them run code safely is the real work.

Alibaba’s OpenSandbox is an open-source sandbox runtime for AI agents. It gives each agent an isolated place to run code, commands, files and even a browser or desktop, on your own infrastructure: Docker on a laptop, Kubernetes in production. It works with coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex, and it is Apache-2.0 licensed.

For me, the most interesting piece is the credential vault. Agents can call external services without ever seeing the real credentials inside the sandbox. Together with per-sandbox network rules, that is a key to better security: an agent that never holds the secret cannot leak it.

Isolation protects the machine. The vault protects the keys. You need both.

How are you handling secrets for your AI agents today?
