With this launch, the company signals its commitment to not just innovation but also accessibility, ensuring these transformative tools can address real-world challenges across industries.

In this article, I’ll experiment with the service to demonstrate how effortlessly it delivers results. My objective is to create a sophisticated Voice AI Agent with expertise in a specific subject, capable not only of answering questions but also performing advanced tasks.

Let’s make a Dungeon Master

The Dungeon Master (DM) is the central storyteller and referee in a game of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), tasked with orchestrating the narrative and mechanics of the game. Acting as the creative engine behind the adventure, the DM crafts the world in which the players’ characters interact, including its geography, history, and inhabitants.

The DM’s responsibilities include:

  • Creating and Presenting the Story: The DM sets the stage for the campaign, describing settings, events, and challenges while adapting to the players’ choices to ensure an engaging and dynamic experience.
  • Roleplaying Non-Player Characters (NPCs): From villagers and shopkeepers to kings and monsters, the DM gives life to every character outside the players’ control, ensuring the world feels immersive and responsive.
  • Managing Rules and Mechanics: The DM interprets and enforces game rules, adjudicates the outcomes of player actions, and resolves disputes to keep the game running smoothly.
  • Facilitating Combat and Challenges: The DM designs encounters, controls enemies, and balances challenges to maintain tension, excitement, and fairness throughout the game.

The DM’s role requires a mix of creativity, flexibility, and fairness, as they guide the story while ensuring that all players feel involved and empowered. While the DM steers the overall narrative, the players’ actions shape the journey, making the experience collaborative and unique to each group.

Building the Eleven Labs’ Conversational AI: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Navigating the Eleven Labs Website

To get started, visit the Eleven Labs homepage at elevenlabs.io. The website’s intuitive interface makes it easy to locate all the tools and resources you need. On the top navigation bar, you’ll find options for their AI services, documentation, and a blog section to stay updated on new features.

If you’re new to the platform, click on the “Sign Up” button to create an account. Fill in the required details, or use a third-party service like Google or GitHub for quick registration. If you already have an account, select “Log In” and enter your credentials to proceed.

Step 2: Creating a New Agent Based on a Video Game Character Template

Once logged in, navigate to the Conversational AI dashboard. Here, you’ll find various tools for creating and managing AI agents. To create a new agent, click on “New Agent”. Eleven Labs offers a variety of templates to speed up the setup process, and for this tutorial, we’ll use the Video Game Character template.

Choose the template, and you’ll be prompted to configure basic details. Assign a name to your agent, such as “Arcade Questmaster” or “Pixel Guardian,” to give it a distinct identity. The template comes pre-loaded with generic traits suitable for a video game NPC.

Step 3: Customizing the System Prompt

The system prompt is where you define the essence of your AI agent—its role, personality, and capabilities. After selecting your template, locate the “System Prompt” section in the agent editor. This field contains the pre-configured description of the agent’s behavior.

To make your agent truly unique, replace the default prompt with a custom one. For instance:

“You are a game master, also called dungeon master, named Gonzo that is a Dungeons & Dragons game host. Your job is to help the user with their gameplay. If the user doesn’t know what their game is, you should propose a game with the following scenario: First, they will meet a woman in need searching help for her child being bullied by lazy city guards; Second, she will lead them (if they agree) to the guards where they can fight according to the game rules. Answer in 3 to 7 sentences in most cases.”

Step 4: Knowledge Base

Locate the Knowledge Base section and add domain-specific information. In this case, Dungeon & Dragons Basic Rule Book in PDF format.
Here, you may encounter the challenge of finding a document with the correct size. Or the challenge to split the file into smaller sizes.

With these steps complete, AI agent is ready for action!

Eleven Labs’ tools make it simple to iterate and perfect your creation, bringing your vision to life effortlessly.
